Libraries, Medicine and Worcester – and historical medical images

Long before U Mass Medical School came to Worcester, there was another connection between libraries and medicine here in town. It was John Green MD (the same Green family as in Green Hill Park) that in 1859 founded the Worcester Public Library with a bequest of books and funding. And his picture is available online through the National Library of Medicine’s Images from the History of Medicine database. Do you need historic medical images to use in a presentation? This collection is the most comprehensive of its kind found online. Not only are there images of people in medicine, you will also find photos of instruments, procedures, buildings, etc. Not all of the images are copyright free but many can be freely used simply by citing the National Library of Medicine in your slide.

Cite Right

There are minimum requirements recognized throughout academia on the proper use of citations in the classroom setting. This is especially true for many of the non-traditional resources found today such as web pages, wikis, blogs, e-mails and other faculty presentations. Use the resources on the new Faculty Attribution Page, created by the Lamar Soutter Library, as a guide when citing materials used in PowerPoint presentations, BLS Vista learning modules and class handouts. Cite right – your colleagues will thank you and your students will thank you.

Today, March 9, 2009, marks the 100th birthday of UMMS founding dean and library namesake Dr. Lamar Soutter. Visit the Lamar Soutter Library homepage soon where you will find a prominent link to an online exhibit of Dr. Soutter’s life. Also, be certain to pick up a copy of our print publication “The SoutteReview” which contains a more lengthy tribute to this man that was instrumental in creating the medical school.

Use this link if you are not certain which of the Lamar Soutter Library’s resources will best answer your question. Find Resources By Subject displays databases, online journals and online textbooks all on one page based on the topic of your choice – one stop shopping!

Delicious - Managing Bookmarks Online

Have you ever had difficulty keeping all of your bookmarks organized? Do you have a different list of favorites on your desktop, your laptop and on your home computer and are always at the wrong place to access what you need? If so, you need Delicious. Delicious is a web-based bookmark tool and more. Accounts are free and you can download a very simple tool that helps you capture and upload bookmarks. Then, these bookmarks are available from any Internet-connected computer you happen to be using. Plus, Delicious lets you “tag” your bookmarks for better organization and, if you choose to, allows other users to search your tags (and you can search theirs as well) to find sites that they might wish to visit.
