Online Journals – More Available Than Ever

The Lamar Soutter Library recently broke the 5,000 mark of biomedical journals available on our online journal list.  If you haven’t looked at the list recently (especially by subject), take a fresh look and you will find many new titles.  Many of the links also have direct access (look for the orange “Current Issue” button) to the current Table of Contents.  The online journal list is near the top of the “Quick Links” index on the left-hand side of the Lamar Soutter Library home page.

DynaMed Now Includes Drug Information

DynaMed, the Evidence-Based Point-of-Care resource tool, now offers information on drugs from the AHFS (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists) in addition to its 3,000 plus clinical topic summaries.  The drug summaries include dosage and administration, adverse effects, interactions, pharmacokinetic and stability and compatibility information in addition to patient information and a robust bibliography.  To access the drug entries in DynaMed, use either the A-Z browse tool or the search feature that will map brand names to generic and vice-versa.  DynaMed is located on the “Quick Link” left-side tool bar of the Lamar Soutter Library’s home page.

PubMed Changes - Continued

As mentioned in last week’s Memo, big changes are in store for PubMed, the MEDLINE interface hosted by the National Library of Medicine.  The preview of the new PubMed is now available at http://preview.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez.  This will work along the old PubMed for about two weeks and then, by the end of the month, this will be the only way to search PubMed.  The good news is that while many of the screens look different, ALL of the functionality of old PubMed will remain intact.  This includes Related Articles, My NCBI, Clinical Queries and Single Citation Matcher.  Granted, there may be some frustration at first in having to learn how to use the new interface but once you get the hang of it, you will probably find it easier, especially in display format.  Library Corner will continue to provide tips in searching the new PubMed over the next few weeks.  If you have any questions, please contact Len Levin or Judy Nordberg (Lamar Soutter Library faculty members) at X6-6028 or X6-2921.

Changes coming to PubMed

Beginning next week, the National Library of Medicine will be rolling out a new look for its MEDLINE interface PubMed.  PubMed was last redesigned in the late 1990’s and this new redesign will not only make the site more user friendly but will also expand some value-added components to results screens such as “Also Try”, “Titles With Your Search Terms” and links to free full-text articles from PubMed Central (some of these are already being “previewed” in the old PubMed).  And while the redesign is meant to make an easier-to-use, more pleasing interface, all of the powerful functionality of PubMed will remain as is.  Look for more information in this space with more details about the new PubMed interface once it becomes available. 

Library Corner Returns

After a summer hiatus, “Library Corner” will now return as a regular feature in the Monday Memo (as well as in its blog format). There will be exciting things to report from the library this fall, including a new look (with added features) for PubMed that will be released soon, a new and easier way to connect to free book lending from our 19 Boston Library Consortium partners and many new initiatives aimed at increasing library services and training on the Memorial campus. Don’t forget that all Library Corner postings from the Monday Memo going back to April 2008 are always available on the Library Corner blog at http://familymedlibrarycorner.blogspot.com

PsycARTICLES® Now Available on Ovid

Library users now have access to the American Psychological Association's PsycARTICLES® journal collection on the Ovid platform. PsycARTICLES® is a database of full-text articles from 66 journals published by the American Psychological Association, the APA Educational Publishing Foundation, the Canadian Psychological Association, and Hogrefe Publishing Group. This collection significantly expands access to full text resources in psychology and behavioral health. These journals are incorporated into search results of Ovid's PsycINFO database.

Located on the right sidebar under the current MedPage Headlines, News @ Nature is a link to up-to-date science news from the premier science journal Nature.
